Sponsors Host Closed Door Forum
On May 12-15, VANOC held the last of eight partner workshops, focusing on operations and hospitality. The 300 participants from 65 sponsors and government funders spent two days in meetings and toured venues for two days. The meetings were closed to the media and no news releases were issued.
“It’s a forum for sponsors to engage with each other, learn, listen and capitalize,” said VANOC Vice President of Sponsorship Sales and Marketing Andrea Shaw.
VANOC network communications sponsor Nortel is in bankruptcy and auto supplier General Motors may be following, but Shaw wouldn’t admit to recession-related funding cuts by any sponsors.
“The Olympic Games come and go and these companies have for the most part plans locked down, budgets locked down, they’re not going to miss this opportunity. Everybody is very optimistic,” she said.
The only example Shaw cited was Hudson’s Bay Company’s ambitions plan to house the Olympic souvenir superstore through the entire main floor of the downtown Vancouver store in conjunction with a variety of other 2010 partners. Previous Games’ used massive, temporary tents.
“HBC is really focused on having that as an absolutely fantastic showcase of what a superstore can be at an Olympic Games,” Shaw said.
COLD-fX Executive Suspended for Insider Trading
An executive with a VANOC sponsor has been suspended by the Alberta Securities Commission for insider trading.
Warren Michaels agreed to pay a $26, 263 fine and $17,507 for the investigation, according to the April 27 settlement agreement. The vice president of communications for Edmonton-based Afexa Life Sciences (formerly CV Technologies) was banned from buying or selling shares for three years and cannot serve as a public company director for one year.
Michaels dumped almost 92,000 shares in the company in December 2006 when he became aware of poor sales results in the U.S. for ginseng-based COLD-fX pills. Sales figures weren’t published until a February 2007 news release.
COLD-fX was announced in January as the official cold and flu remedy of the 2010 Games. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration, however, will not allow Michaels’ company to make the same claims about the product south of the border.
