(ATR) The Vancouver 2010 torch travels east through the Northwest Territories crossing into Nunavut on Day 7 of the journey through the snow flurries of Northern Canada.
Wednesday highlights include Australian gold medalist skier Alisa Camplin carrying the torch through the historic Gold Rush capital Dawson City. Frigid temperatures caused the Olympic flame to burn dry, forcing VANOC to relight a torch from one of the backup flames contained in a miner’s lamp. The flame then took a ride on a dog sled through the northern Yukon town Old Crow where the temperature dropped to minus 37c.
Today, the torch makes its first stop in the Northwest Territory of Dettah which translates from Tli Cho to “Burnt Point” referencing the traditional fishing camp used by the Dene for hundreds of years. The flame will then continue to the city of Ndilo.
The torch will then be carried through the Northwest Territories capital Yellowknife located on the north shore of Great Slave Lake.
The torch relay will rest the evening in the city of Kugluktuk as it crosses into the Canadian territory of Nunavut by dog sled.
