(ATR) The Vancouver 2010 torch travels south through Nunavut crossing into Alberta on Day 8 of the journey through the frigid temperatures of Canadian terrain.
Thursday highlights include a ride into the territory of Nunavet by dog sled.
Today, the torch makes its first stop in the growing city of Grand Prairie as it crosses into the province of Alberta. The flame will ride in a chuckwagon 900 meters through the northwestern town. The torch then travels northeast to Fort McMurray located 60 kilometers (37 mi) west of the Saskatchewan border.
The torch relay will rest the evening in the city of Cold Lake with an estimated temperature of minus 2c. The community celebration will welcome the torch with a line-up of local musicians and bands.
It continues into Saskatchewan on Saturday to La Ronge. The torch will then progress into Manitoba traveling to the town of Thompson. On Sunday the flame takes a ride in a Polar Rover through Churchill and then heads northeast to Canadian Forces Station Alert. Churchill is a well-known polar bear-viewing site while the Nunavut community of Alert is Canada's most northerly community, 900 kilometers (559 mi) from the North Pole.
