Coverage of the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver by Around the Rings set records for monthly website traffic.
Readership during the 2010 Winter Games shattered web traffic records set last October during the race to host the 2016 Olympics and Paralympics. For the month of February and coverage of the Vancouver Olympics, ATR recorded 3.7 million hits – nearly double the traffic for Torino 2006 and significantly higher than the Beijing Games in 2008. Statistics independently recorded.
Around the Rings Editor Ed Hula says the numbers indicate the website's status as the world’s leading source of information about the business of the Olympic Movement.*
“These numbers are like a medal from the Olympics for Team ATR,” says Hula.
“We are dedicated to providing our readers with the most important news from the Olympic theater. In Vancouver, we had our largest team ever for a Winter Games. Backed by our Atlanta and European offices, they worked hard to report stories and developments from the Games at a world-class level,” he says.
ATR coverage included a mix of breaking news, feature reporting and exclusive interviews with leading figures such as British Columbia Premier Gordon Campbell, USOC CEO Scott Blackmun and FIS President Gian-Franco Kasper.
ATR also was buoyed by the success of the Newsmaker Breakfast on Feb. 22. An overflow crowd of more than 100 attended the session at the Olympians Reunion Center to hear Hula and his distinguished panel discuss the topic of Olympic legacy. The event was sponsored by VisitBritain and UK Sport.
ATR Editor Ed Hula explored the theme of Keeping the Games Alive with Sochi 2014 CEO Dmitry Chernyshenko, British Columbia finance minister Colin Hansen, five-time Olympian Charmaine Crooks, UK Sport Chief Executive John Steele and IOC Executive Board member Craig Reedie of Great Britain.
"The Breakfasts give Around the Rings another avenue to share the knowledge and insights we have gained over the last 20 years. It also makes it possible for our readers to meet Olympic insiders they otherwise might only read about," Publisher Sheila Scott Hula said. "We have hosted these events all over the world for the last 15 years, and we look forward to our next series."
