The United States Olympic Committee and Twitter announced today plans to team up for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games to build the Red, White and #BlueRoom at USA House, providing social content for Team USA fans. Twitter will serve as Team USA’s exclusive social media platform from USA House – the USOC’s business and hospitality center for athletes and families, corporate partners and more during the Games.
The content will be pushed through Team USA’s Twitter, Periscope and Vine accounts, and will also feature Periscope chats from inside USA House. The @TeamUSA handle will invite fans behind the scenes with Team USA to supplement the live coverage of the Rio 2016 Games on NBCUniversal, the exclusive rights holder of the Games in the United States.
As a part of larger efforts to drive tune-in to the Games, @TeamUSA will also push promotion messaging and links to live streaming of NBCUniversal’s Olympics coverage, as well as support the social effort of @NBCOlympics.
"Working with Twitter inside USA House in Rio is an incredible opportunity to bring our passionate fans closer to their favorite athletes and teams in creative and engaging ways," said Lisa Baird, USOC chief marketing officer. "Fans will be treated to unique behind-the-scenes photos, interviews and more from the Red, White and #BlueRoom."
"Twitter's collaboration with the USOC will allow Team USA fans around the world see what's happening inside USA House," said Leslie Berland, CMO of Twitter. "We're thrilled to bring fans behind the scenes with Team USA through Twitter, Vine and Periscope, throughout the Games."
Twitter, Vine and Periscope will be the only social media platforms pre-installed on the Samsung Galaxy S7 edge Olympic Games Limited Edition cell phones issued to all U.S. athletes. Additionally, USOC staff will capture exclusive content around Rio with a fleet of customized Team USA Twitter Mirrors.
To help bring Team USA tweets to life, Twitter has created a special hashtag-generated Twitter emoji when fans use the hashtag #TeamUSA. Fans are now able to Tweet and join the conversation to bring color to their Team USA Tweets. Twitter will also provide support for Team USA and the USOC from its platforms – including from @Twitter and @TwitterSports – before, during and after the Rio Games.
The 2016 USOC and Twitter collaboration kicked off on July 23 with a live Periscope announcing the 555 members of the 2016 U.S. Olympic Team. The live announcement took place in Los Angeles with veteran U.S. athletes and was hosted by four-time Olympic swimming champion and LA2024 vice chairman Janet Evans.
