The United States has qualified the most wrestlers to compete in the 2012 Olympic Games of any nation in the world. The qualification process for wrestling for the London Olympics has now concluded.
In wrestling, a nation may have only one athlete in each weight class at the Olympic Games.
The United States has qualified to compete in 17 of the 18 Olympic weight classes in wrestling. USA Wrestling has qualified to compete in all seven men’s freestyle weights, all four women’s freestyle weights and six of the seven Greco-Roman weight classes.
Russia is second with 16 qualified weight classes, with all seven men’s freestyle weights, six of the seven Greco-Roman weight classes and three of the four women’s freestyle weight classes.
Kazakhstan is third with 15 qualifiers, with all seven men’s freestyle weights, five of the seven Greco-Roman weight classes and three of the four women’s freestyle weight classes.
In fourth is Egypt, with 14 qualified weight classes, including all seven in Greco-Roman, six of the seven men’s freestyle weight classes and one of the four women’s freestyle weight classes.
Tied in fifth are six nations with 13 qualifiers each: Azerbaijan, Georgia, Iran, Japan, Turkey and Ukraine.
Other nations with more than 10 qualified weight classes are Cuba with 12 qualifiers and Belarus with 11 qualifiers.
At this time, there are a total of 65 nations which have qualified to compete in at least one weight class at the 2012 Summer Olympic Games.
There will be 344 entries in wrestling at the 2012 London Games competing in the three Olympic styles, men’s freestyle, women’s freestyle and Greco-Roman. That will include 266 men (freestyle and Greco-Roman) and 72 women (freestyle).
There will be six additional Olympic berths to be announced now that the Olympic Qualifying Series of events has ended. Three spots are assigned to the Tripartite Commission, and three spots will be given to host country Great Britain if they do not qualify athletes for wrestling at the Olympics. Great Britain did not qualify any athletes through the qualifying process. The Tripartite Commission spots will not go to nations which have already earned wrestling qualifiers.
Note: At this time, 65 different nations have qualified to compete in wrestling in London.
