(ATR) - Synchronized swimmer Tammy Crow says "I'm so, so sorry,'' about the car crash last February that led to the death of her boyfriend and a 12 year-old passenger. The apology, the first public statements she has made about the accident, come one week after she was sentenced to a 90-day jail term for her role as the driver in the fatal crash. But in a move that may be interpreted as special treatment for an athlete, the judge says Crow can serve her sentence after the Athens Olympics.
Crow suffered a broken arm and other injuries in the crash, but managed to recover and qualify in December for a spot on the U.S. squad for Athens. While Crow, 27, may have earned a place, U.S. Olympic Committee spokesman Darryl Seibel tell Around the Rings the USOC has the final say on who travels to Greece in any of the Olympic sports and has yet to certify the synchronized swimming team.
U.S. Synchronized Swimming says in a statement that Crow's "operation of a vehicle and the resulting tragic consequences, do not . . . make her ineligible to represent the United States.
