(ATR) Seven-time Paralympic medalist Muffy Davis tells Around the Rings she is ready to bring her passion for para sport to the International Paralympic Committee Governing Board.
"Paralympics has been an important part of my life most of my life now," Davis tells ATR reporter Kevin Nutley on the latest edition of ATRadio. "As a past athlete and an alumni, I want to really try and grow our movement but maintain the athlete-centered focus which I think the Paralympics does a really good job at – in all of their decisions they know the athletes are the core of the organization."
Davis, a two-sport Paralympian in para-skiing and para-cycling, is one of 22 candidates seeking one of the 10 at-large positions on the IPC Governing Board available at the Sep. 8 election during the IPC General Assembly in Abu Dhabi, U.A.E. She is the first candidate for IPC governance to ever be nominated by the United States Olympic Committee.
A spokesperson for the USOC tells ATR her nomination is part of the United States’ larger efforts to play a more engaged role with the international Paralympic Movement. Davis says she is honored by her nomination and hopes to follow in the footsteps of previous U.S. representative on the IPC board, Ann Cody.
Davis also showed enthusiasm for the transitions the IPC is about to experience at the election where IPC chief Philip Craven will end his 12-year tenure at the helm of the organization and will be replaced by one of the four candidates seeking the presidency: Andrew Parsons, Patrick Jarvis, John Petersson or Zhang Haidi.
A member of the IPC Women in Sport Commission, Davis highlighted her manifesto which includes an emphasis on greater women’s participation in the movement. She says her experience in the Paralympic Movement makes her an ideal candidate for a voice on the IPC Governing Board.
"I want people to know I’m very passionate about the movement," she tells ATR. "I want to do whatever I can to help grow and evolve and bring those benefits to everyone with an impairment throughout the world and even those without to – like our mission says – inspire and excite the world."
Davis also touches on the issues and challenges facing the Paralympic Movement such as the Russian doping crisis and the classification system.
