UAE Basketball Association will welcome FIBA for the 2014 FIBA U17 World Championship bid site inspection. This is a crucial part of Dubai’s bid and is supported by the UAE government, the Dubai Sports Council and the UAE Basketball Association. The site inspection is scheduled for Monday 17 and Tuesday 18 of March.
Mr Ismail Al-Gergawi, President of UAE Basketball Association commented, "We are delighted to be welcoming FIBA to Dubai and have prepared a busy schedule to show them our fantastic basketball facilities as well as Dubai’s world class hotels and tourism infrastructure. We have been working hard to develop our sport in the UAE and the region but we need a driver for development to take it to the next level. We believe that these U17 World Championships would create the platform we need to achieve our aims and increase the number of players and the profile for our great sport. We have strong government support for the event and hope that we will be successful in securing this for Dubai".
Dubai has a high level of basketball infrastructure that every year hosts the top clubs in the Middle East during the Dubai International Championship. A strong local and expat following makes basketball one of the most popular sports in Dubai. A new 3on3 initiative is also proving successful and further underlines the potential for growth in UAE and the region.
Dubai is well versed in handling tourists welcoming over 10 million tourists each year. Dubai has hosted many major international sports events including the FINA World Swimming Championships in 2010 and hosts annual major events including the Dubai Tennis Championships and the Dubai Sevens Rugby Union tournament.
UAE Basketball Association has commissioned sports and entertainment marketing agency, Impact34, to assist with their bid. Bettina Kuperman, CEO, stated, "The UAE Basketball Association is dedicated to grow basketball in UAE and the region. Working alongside the Federation we have witnessed the great potential for growth and the impact this would have not just on the sport but also on the society. The Basketball World Championships have never been in this part of the world so this is a unique opportunity for the international basketball community to develop new markets and make basketball truly global".
