(ATR) Golf and artistic gymnastics are the latest sports added to the program for the inaugural European Sports Championships, set to take place from Aug. 1-12, 2018.
On Friday, the European Sports Championship 2018 board made the announcement of the new sports joining the program.
European Aquatics president Paolo Barellisays Friday's announcement offers "the best conditions for athletes to express themselves while also creating interest for the main TV networks in Europe."
The golfing team championships will take place at the famous Gleneagles golf course in Scotland, host of the 2014 Ryder Cup. Men’s and women’s artistic gymnastics will be staged at the SSE Hydro Arena, the venue currently hosting the 2015 world championships for artistic gymnastics.
The 2018 event also represents the first time men and women will compete in a golf tournament at the same time, with men’s, women’s and mixed team competitions set to take place, according to ESPN.
Golf and gymnastics will join athletics, aquatics, cycling, rowing and triathlon as the European sport federations that have agreed to stage the continental championships.
All events will be hosted in Glasgow, Scotland with the exception of athletics, which will take place in Berlin.
Glasgow is expected to host a little more than 3,000 competitors for the six championships in the city while approximately 1,500 athletes will be in Berlin for the athletics championships.
The new format will be replicated every four years.
The European Broadcasting Union is the official broadcast partner for the first edition of the championships. The EBU expects to provide more than 2,750 hours of coverage to Europe’s biggest broadcasters for free.
"With seven sports now part of the first edition, the European Sports Championships will be the centerpiece of the sports season in Europe and public service media is proud to participate in the promotion of European sports and its athletes through extensive free-to air coverage across television, digital and radio," said EBU president Jean-Paul Philippot.
The European Sports Championship board expects to reach a television audience of roughly 850 million people and an even larger following through the use of digital media platforms.
