The first day of competition in the Turin Paralympics will have medals awarded in alpine skiing and biathlon.

First day of competitions in the Biathlon and six medals have already been assigned.

The morning kicked off the women?s sitting category 10 km event and the men?s sitting category 12 km event.

Among the women, the Ukrainian athletes dominated and occupied all three steps of the podium. Gold to Olena Iurkovska, silver to Lyudmyla Pavlenko and bronze to Svytlana Trifonova.

On the other hand, Russian domination in the men?s 12.5 Km event, Vladimir Kiselev, Taras Kryjanovski and Mikhail Terentiev brought home the gold, silver and bronze, respectively.

The IX Paralympic Winter Games introduces a new three-category system for alpine skiing, creating a more competitive environment that will increase the value and significance of medals earned among a field of more competitors.

The three disability categories will include sitting, standing and visually impaired for all four alpine disciplines.

The factoring system multiplies the athlete?s actual race time by a pre-determined factor based on historical race results. The goal of the factored result is to create a level playing field for the athletes with different disabilities who are competing directly against one another.
