(ATR) The Winter Paralympics in Turin are now two months away, the day marked with a ceremony in the center of Turin, complete with an artificial snowstorm.

"This event really captured the essence of what the Torino 2006 Paralympic Winter Games are all about ? elite sport, culture and having a good time," said International Paralympic Committee President Phil Craven.

The ceremony at the Carignano Theater included appearances by team members from the Juventus and Torino football clubs, Italian Olympians and Paralympians.

Details of the Paralympics opening ceremony were announced at Monday's event, along with plans for the relay of the Paralympic flame, which will start March 1.

Opening of the Paralympics will take place March 10 at the Stadium Communale. The closing ceremony will happen at the Piazza Castello medals plaza on March 19.

K2006, the company formed to handle the opening and closing ceremonies for the Olympics, will also be responsible for the Paralympic ceremonies.

More than 550 athletes from 41 nations are expected for the Turin Paralympics.

Joining a sports program that includes alpine skiing, sledge hockey and nordic skiing, wheelchair curling makes its debut at these Winter Paralympics.

Events will be held in Turin, Pinerolo, Pragelato and Sestriere. Paralympic organizers say that as many as 200,000 spectators will attend.
