On Saturday at the FIBA Europe General Assembly in Munich, Germany Turkish Basketball Federation (TBF) President Turgay Demirel was elected President of FIBA Europe for the next five years. His victory by a vote of 40-8 marks the first time a Turk has been elected to the position.

"This is a great honour, and I want to thank the countries of FIBA Europe for putting their trust in me," Demirel said. "I am excited to work with my colleagues throughout Europe to grow the greatest sport in the world."

Demirel has served as President of TBF since 1992, and has been re-elected six times in the last 22 years. During his tenure as president Turkish Basketball has become a global power in both men's and women's basketball. The Senior Men's National Team won silver at the 2010 FIBA World Championship at Turkey, and the Senior Women's National Team finished fifth at the 2012 Olympics.

FIBA Europe is the official governing body of European basketball and oversees some of Europe's top professional leagues, including EuroCup, EuroLeague Women, and EuroChallenge. It also organizes EuroBasket and EuroBasket Women, the world's premiere continental tournaments.
