(ATR) Athletes and Federations around the world are promoting and supporting the International Triathlon Union in its bid to include Mixed Relays on the Tokyo 2020 Olympic program.
"I really think we have all the ingredients," ITU president and IOC member Marisol Casado said in a statement.
"It’s thrilling, exciting and engages with spectators, both onsite and on television. We really think it will be a great value to include the Triathlon Mixed Relays to the Olympic program."
Olympic medalist Gwen Jorgensen, as well as athletes Jodie Stimpson, Dominika Jamnicky and Ben Kanute are among the hundreds of triathletes who have publicized their support.
The event has already been incorporated in the Asian Games and will be featured in the 2018 Commonwealth Games program.
The ITU have presented a formal bid to the International Olympic Committee. During the IOC's Executive Board meeting taking place July 9-10, the final decision will be made on the sports inclusion in the next Summer Olympic program.
