Fourth Jamacian Fails Drug Test

Traves Smikle becomes the fourth Jamaican to test positive for a banned substance in the past week.

The Olympic discus thrower was notified by the Jamaica Anti-Doping Commission (JADCO) after his sample from the Jamaica National Trials in June detected a banned substance.

Smikle said he is "hurt and embarrassed" by the positive test, but noted that he did not knowingly ingest the banned substance.

"As an athlete I must take responsibility for whatever is found in my body," Smikle said.

"Personally I am very saddened and surprised by these findings, as I have never attempted to cheat and have always considered myself an ambassador for the sport and a strong supporter of drug testing."

Smikle requested an analysis of his "B" sample, and said he is willing to work with JADCO to ensure a smooth investigation.

Powell’s sponsorship suspended

Chinese sportswear company Li Ning suspended their sponsorship of Jamaican sprinter Asafa Powell following his positing test for a banned substance.

Li Ning said that it has "great respect" for Powell, but suspended the sponsorship until the investigation concludes.

"The company will be following the incident closely and has suspended its sponsorship with Powell pending the outcome of the investigations," Li Ning said in a statement.

"If he is found to be involved in the use of banned stimulants, Li Ning Company will immediately terminate its sponsorship contract with Powell."

UK Receives Economic Boost

United Kingdom economists estimate a $15 billion economic boost in the wake of the 2012 London Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The UK Trade and Investment department (UKTI) issued the research report.

The claims were met with skepticism from experts such as former chief economist at the Cabinet Office Jonathan Portes.

Despite doubts surrounding the UKTI research, IOC President Jacques Rogge affirmed in a statement to the BBC that the 2012 London Olympics acted as a "catalyst for development and improvements, both tangible and intangible, which would otherwise have taken decades to achieve."
