Around 180,000 people came to watch the Olympic torch cross between Europe and Asia.
The torch traveled through the Russian city of Magnitogorsk, visiting the Ural River and the famous metallurgical combine in the city.
As part of the relay, the torch visited different sites throughout the city while crossing over the Ural River two times. The Ural River is seen as the border between Europe and Asia, meaning the torch traversed two continents during today’s relay.
Over 100 people carried the torch before regional mayor Eugene Teftelev and former Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works chairman Viktor Rashnikov lit the Olympic cauldron in the city.
Yesterday, the flame traveled by camel in the city of Chelyabinsk in a historical nod to the city’s position on the ancient Silk Road.
Biathletes Svetlana Ishmouratova and Alexander Tikhonov were part of the 266 torchbearers that took place in the relay in Chelyabinsk, a city notable for a February meteor strike.
The torch will travel to the city of Ufa tomorrow for a two day journey through the city and surrounding area.
Overall, 14,000 runners will carry the torch across a distance of 38,525 miles. The flame is touring 83 towns and cities before heading back into European Russia, and ultimately Sochi, for the 2014 Winter Olympics opening ceremony on February 7.
