(ATR) Russian, Ukranian, and Belarussian culture played into the torch relay in Bryansk on Wednesday.
Folk songs from the three countries were performed during the relay, in which over 150 people carried the torch through the city.
A performance group from Gomel, Belarus entertained spectators with stage performances throughout the week as part of the torch relay festivities.
Bryansk is located near the intersection of Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus, and has changed hands between Russia, Lithuania, Poland, and Belarus throughout history.
Olympic silver medalist Sergei Pyzhianov was the first torchbearer in Bryansk, and the torch was greeted by spectators in the Dynamo Bryansk Stadium for the day’s closing ceremonies. The stadium is host to FC Dynamo Bryansk, which plays in Russia’s third division.
Thursday the torch will travel to Kursk in Russia’s outermost Western cities. Kursk was founded in 1032, and was the site of the largest tank battle in history during World War II. The site was a major turning point in the Russian defeat of Germany.
With less than one month to go, the flame is making its way back into European Russia, and ultimately Sochi, for the 2014 Winter Olympics opening ceremony on February 7.
