Indigenous peoples from theSakhalin Island welcomed the Sochi Olympic flame on Thursday, as the relay made a stop in the city ofYuzhno-Sakhalinski. It is a twin city of Sapporo, Japan, the host of the 1972 Winter Olympics.Sochi 2014 says 57 torchbearers carried the flame throughYuzhno-Sakhalinsk.
On Wednesday, Paralympic swimmerRoman Dubovoy was among 58 torchbearers who ran with the flame inPetropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.Sochi 2014 dubsPetropavlovsk-Kamchatskyone of the "oldest Russian cities in the Far East." It is also the capital city of theKamchatka region.
The relay heads to the capital of thePrimorye region on Friday.Vladivostok is located at the head of the Golden Horn Bay; it is also in close proximity to Russia's borders with China and North Korea. Sochi 2014 predicts 215 torchbearers will participate in this stage of the relay.
Overall, 14,000 runners will carry the torch across a total distance of 38,525 miles.The flame is touring 83 towns and cities before heading back into European Russia, and ultimately Sochi, for the 2014 Winter Olympics opening ceremony on February 7.
