On Tuesday, the Sochi Olympic flame visited theAvachinsky volcano during itstour of theKamchatkaregion.TheAvachinsky volcano towers above the region at an elevation of approximately 2,741 meters.
The torch relay's first stop on Tuesday was the city of Anadyr.
Anadyr is located in the region of Chukotkaalong the Bering Strait; Sochi 2014 says Anadyr is "where Russia ends."A lineup of 33 torchbearers ran with the flame throughAnadyr. The line-up included Russian musherMichael Telpin, who hails from the region. The relay route in Anadyr was approximately 5.6 miles.
Next, the flame traveled south to the city of Elizovo. Sochi 2014 says the city is a "major aviation hub" in the region and the second largest city in the region.Of the 14 torchbearers scheduled to run with the flame in Elizovo, six carried the torch by theAvachinskiy volcano.
Paralympic swimmerRoman Dubovoy is among 41 torchbearers who will run with the flame on Wednesday inPetropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.Sochi 2014 dubsPetropavlovsk-Kamchatskyone of the "oldest Russian cities in the Far East."
Altogether, 14,000 runners will carry the torch across a total distance of 38,525 miles.The flame is touring 83 towns and cities before heading back into European Russia, and ultimately Sochi, for the 2014 Winter Olympics opening ceremony on February 7.
