The Sochi Olympic flame arrives inVeliky Novgorod, approximately 329 miles northwest of Moscow.
The line-up of around 86 torchbearers who will carry the flame throughVeliky Novgorod includes Olympic rowerNina Trofimova. Chairman and CEO of International Sports Multimedia Raymond Goldsmith will also run in the torch relay. Around the Rings is speaking with Goldsmith about his experience on Monday.
The welcoming ceremony inVeliky Novgorod was held at the Rurik fort on the right bank of the Volkhov river.
On Wednesday, the relay traveled through Pryazha and Olonets. A combined nine torchbearers participated in these stages of the torch relay.Pryazha is around 600 miles north of Moscow while Olonets is approximately 544 miles north of Moscow.
The final torchbearer inPryazha carried the flame while driving a makeshift dog sled; due to the lack of snow on the ground, the dogs pulled the torchbearer and flame using an all-terrain vehicle.
The flame will continue its trek to St. Petersburg on Friday as it heads to Izborsk andPskov. Both cities are about 456 miles northwest of Moscow. Some 66 torchbearers will participate in these stages of the torch relay including Russian boxing starValery Brudov.
The Sochi torch relay organizing committee predicts more than 100,000 spectators will gather to watch the relay make its way through St. Petersburg on October 27 and October 28.
