The Olympic flame has journeyed toMount Elbrus. Mount Elbrus' peak is the highest in Russia and Europe, according to Sochi 2014.
While it is commonly referred to as a mountain, Mount Elbrus is actually a layered volcano. Sochi 2014 says its last eruption was almost 2,000 years ago.
The first documented ascent of Mount Elbrus' western peak took place in 1874.
Representatives from Vladikavkaz and Nalchikcarried the flame on Thursday.Due to Vladikavkaz's proximity to the breakaway territory of South Ossetia, currently claimed by Georgia, the torch relay was conducted entirely inside Republican Spartak Stadium.
The flame journeys to Maykop on Monday. Maykop is approximately 161 miles from Sochi.
Olympic judoka Vladimir Nevzorov hails fromMaykop.
With less than one month to go, the flame is making its way back into European Russia and, ultimately, Sochi for the 2014 Winter Olympics opening ceremony on February 7.
