(ATR) On Wednesday, the flame visited the capital city of Kamchatka, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.
The city, located near the southern tip of the Kamchatka Peninsula, was founded in 1697 and is a major port and fishing center.
58 torchbearers ran with the torch through the city, ending with a ceremony consisting of singing and traditional dance.
On the relay route, the flame visited Avachinskaya Bay, loated in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. Avachinskaya Bay is the second largest bay in the world behind Australia’s Port Jackson.
The flame visited Russia’s Pacific Fleet and took a ride around the bay in one of the vessels stationed there.
Yesterday, the flame traveled down the face of Avachin volcano as part of the relay. A combination of skiers, snowboarders, ATVs, jeeps, snowmobiles, and dogsleds carried the torch down themountain and through Kamchatka.
Tomorrow the flame visits Sakhalin Island and the city of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk. Yuzhno-Sakhalinski is a twin city of Sapporo, Japan the host of the 1972 Winter Olympics.
Altogether, 14,000 runners will carry the torch across a total distance of 38,525 miles. The flame is touring 83 towns and cities before heading back into European Russia, and ultimately Sochi, for the 2014 Winter Olympics opening ceremony on February 7.
