The Olympic flame began its journey in the Rostov region at the Arc de Triomphe in Novocherkassk. According to RIA Novosti, the monument symbolizes victory for the Cossacks during the War of 1812.
Former footballer Dmitriy Ananko hails fromNovocherkassk.
Over 400 torchbearers will run with the flame through the Rostov region over the next two days. RIA Novosti says the complete relay route through the Rostov region will exceed 44 miles.
On Tuesday, the torch relay also journeyed to Shakhty. Sochi 2014 says nine Olympic champions and one Paralympic champion were born in Shakhty.
Legendary Russian weightlifting coach Davyd Riegert will run with the torch in Shakhty.
On Wednesday, the flame travels to the city of Rostov-on-Don. According to Sochi 2014, Rostov-on-Don is on a "preliminary list of cities to host matches" for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
One of the torchbearers in Rostov-on-Don will be Russian figure skating federation CEO Valentin Piseyev.
With less than one month to go, the flame is making its way back into European Russia and, ultimately, Sochi for the 2014 Winter Olympics opening ceremony on February 7.
