(ATR) The Sochi Olympic torch relay resumed on Friday when it toured the city of Novosibirsk.
Novosibirsk is the third-most populous city in Russia after Moscow and St. Petersburg.The city is home to the Sibirsk Branch of the Academy of Sciences, a biathlon school, and Hockey Club Sibir in Russia’s top ice hockey division.
More than 200 torchbearers ran with the flame inNovosibirsk.
One notable torchbearer was101-year-old resident Alexander Kaptarenko.He earned attention by training for his 200-meter run by jogging with a frozen salmon in his right hand.
Olympic parallel slalom championEkaterina Ilyukhina also ran with the torch.
The torch relay journeys through two cities in theNovosibirsk Region on Sunday:Kuibyshev andBarabinsk. A combined nine torchbearers will carry the flame through these cities.
Kuibyshev was originally namedKainsk, after the Kainka River.
Sochi 2014 says a "cornerstone" of Barabinsk's economy is its location on the route of the Trans-Siberian Railway.
After its stop in Barabinsk, the flame will travel approximately 160 miles west to the city ofKalachinsk on Sunday.
According to Sochi 2014,Kalachinsk is home to one of Russia's best motocross tracks.
Altogether, 14,000 runners will carry the torch across a total distance of 38,525 miles.The flame is touring 83 towns and cities before heading back into European Russia, and ultimately Sochi, for the 2014 Winter Olympics opening ceremony on February 7.
