The Sochi Olympic flame is heading east into Asian Russia over the next three weeks before circling back to European Russia.
Around 130 torchbearers carried the flame through Severodvinsk and Arkhangelsk on Friday. Olympic gymnast Svetlana Klyukina was among those in Severodvinsk who ran with the torch.
Sochi 2014 describes Severodvinsk as the center of Russia’s ship-building industry. The American film "K-19: The Widowmaker," starring Harrison Ford, Liam Neeson, and Peter Sarsgaard was filmed in Severodvinsk. The city is approximately 22 miles west of Arkhangelsk. Russian Olympic swimmer Eugene Lagunov was among the list of torchbearers who ran with the flame through Arkhangelsk.
The flame heads south to Syktyvkar on Saturday by plane. Olympic skier Raisa Smetanina is set to light the Olympic cauldron to conclude this stage of the relay. On Sunday, the relay travels northeast to Naryan-Mar.
Novy Urengoy and Salekhard will welcome the flame on Monday. Olympic swimmer Sergey Fesikov is listed as a torchbearer for this portion of the relay.
So far, Sochi 2014 reports that the relay has visited 37 cities in 17 regions of Russia.
The "car segment" of the relay, which was launched on October 7, ended on Monday in St. Petersburg. Sochi 2014 says the torch traveled more than 6,200 miles by car, roughly equivalent to a trip from Moscow to Los Angeles.
