(ATR) The head of Tokyo 2020 is uneasy with the lack of progress in dismantling the city’s former Olympic stadium.
On Wednesday, Yoshiro Mori told Rugby World Cup officials that he was concerned that the delays in the demolition of the National Stadium would interfere with events later down the road, the Associated Press reports.
The National Stadium was originally scheduled for demolition on Sept. 29, but postponed until mid-Dec. due to bidding problems. Organizers hope that the 80,000-seat replacement stadium will house the 2019 Rugby World Cup as well as the 2020 Olympic Games.
"I'm worried," Mori said. "The Olympics are for Tokyo, but we will have about 12 Rugby World Cup venues spread around the country."
"Because we'll open up all of Japan for everyone to see, we want the success of 2019 to carry over to the Tokyo Olympics," he added.
The stadium designed to replace the National Stadium was originally criticized for its size and cost. Although the designs have been scaled down, the stadium is still estimated to cost over $1.3 billion.
