(ATR) The Tokyo governor has defended his call to cut costs for the 2020 Olympic Games by relocating venues.
At a press conference on Wednesday, Yoichi Masuzoe insisted that moving venues to the greater Tokyo area will not increase travel times between facilities if a good transportation system is in place.
"Even if a venue is 60 miles away, you can still achieve a maximum travel time of 30 minutes if the transportation system is appropriate," Masuzoe told reporters.
Masuzoe believes that the Tokyo 2020 Games need to be compact in price, not just geography, in order to be successful.
"We are working with the IOC and the various sports federations to make the games sustainable," Masuzoe said.
Masuzoe did not refer to plans to replace the Tokyo National Stadium at the press conference, which has drawn criticism over its size, design, and cost.
