(ATR) Restaurants in Tokyo could be smoke-free for the 2020 Olympics.
Tokyo Metropolitan Governor Yoichi Masuzoe spoke on Japanese television calling for a city-wide restaurant smoking ban before the 2020 Olympics.
"Japan is the only advanced nation where smoking is permitted at restaurants," Masuzoe as saying on television by Japanese media.
"We’d like to pass an ordinance with the cooperation of the metropolitan assembly."
Smoking is widespread throughout Japanese culture, with cigarettes readily for sale at vending machines and stores seemingly everywhere.
The agencies also said Masuzoe wants a broad effort to combat the dangers of second-hand smoke before the 2020 Olympics.
