(ATR) A sea of spectators crowded downtown Tokyo to welcome home Japanese medalists. Around 800,000 fans were in attendance.
Eighty-seven Japanese Olympic and Paralympic athletes rode through the Ginza district in Tokyo celebrating their medal-winning performances at the Rio Games. During the 1.5 mile journey through the famous shopping area fans reunited with athletes and shared excitement about the country hosting the next summer Games.
Five sports have been added to the Olympic program at the Tokyo Games. Karate, skateboarding, sports climbing, and surfing will be making their Olympic debuts while baseball/softball returns after a hiatus of 12 years.
The Tokyo 2020 Games will begin on July 24 and conclude on Aug. 9.
