Partnering with Alibaba Cloud & Intel, will leverage Cloud and AI technologies

to enhance spectator experience at urban sports events

Tokyo, 04 September 2019 – The Tokyo Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games

(Tokyo 2020) today launched its "TOKYO 2020 Open Innovation Challenge", a technology competition

aimed at creating an innovative spectator experience and encouraging as many people as possible to

become involved in the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020.

Participants are invited to develop and submit prototypes of any type of technology application leveraging

the very latest Cloud and AI technologies, including mobile, web-based or robot applications. The aim is

to enhance the future spectator experience for sporting events and highlight Tokyo 2020’s commitment to

innovation.

This "Open Innovation Challenge" will focus on the spectator experience at basketball (3x3), BMX

freestyle, skateboarding and sport climbing events – the new, youth-focused urban sports making their

first appearance in the Olympic Programme at the Games.

Alibaba Cloud and Intel are partnering with Tokyo 2020 to organise the Challenge. Alibaba Cloud will

provide cloud computing services; Intel will lend a variety of assets including the Intel® Neural Compute

Stick 2 and the Intel® Distribution of OpenVINO™ toolkit. Tokyo 2020, Alibaba Cloud and Intel will jointly

review and select as winners those who develop the most innovative and creative applications.

Challenge Outline

Title: TOKYO 2020 Open Innovation Challenge

Participants: Individuals or groups from Japan or overseas (those under the respective age of

consent in their country or region must obtain the approval of a parent or legal

guardian)

Conditions: No commercial sponsorship or promotion is permitted

Theme: Improving the urban sports spectator experience (making it easier, more fun and

more interesting)

Schedule:

Application period: 4 September 2019 to 13 October 2019

First examination: 14 October 2019 to 1 November (document screening)

Result announcement: 2 November 2019

Training session: 9 November (in Japanese only; for English see "Training")

Final examination: 22 February 2020 (presentation)

Training: Developers or groups who pass the first screening will be invited to take part in a

training programme to learn about the Alibaba Cloud environment and Intel AI

products. The training will take place in Tokyo, and the programme will be in a

lecture format conducted in Japanese. An English training document will be

organised for those who do not speak Japanese.

Award: Gold Prize, Silver Prize, Bronze Prize and 2020 Special Prize.
