(ATR) After announcing their first gold partner for the 2020 Games, organizers are poised to unveil another top-tier sponsor in February.
Nippon Telegraph and Telephone (NTT) Corporation was on Monday named as the first major sponsor recruited by Tokyo 2020.
NTT becomes the official telecommunications services partner of the Games. Japanese media say the deal is worth around $128 million.
Tokyo 2020 said around 100 journalists attended today’s announcement in the Japanese capital.
Around the Rings understands that Olympic organizers will announce a second gold partner in the coming week or two.
It may coincide with the IOC Project Review next week when a team led by Olympic Games executive director Christophe Dubi will be in Tokyo to inspect progress across the 2020 project.
Tokyo 2020 is targeting six to 10 gold partners, in line with the premium-level sponsorship program of the Rio 2016 Olympics and London Games.
The NTT announcement comes a year after the formation of the Tokyo 2020 organising committee.
"We are looking forward immensely to working together with NTT to deliver a magnificent stage where athletes from across the world can come together to compete to the peak of their abilities," said Tokyo 2020 president Yoshiro Mori.
"NTT has a long and distinguished history of connecting people across the length and breadth of Japan, and it is my earnest wish that we will be able to work together to further strengthen bonds between people and ensure that we deliver a successful Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2020."
Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation offers a range of information and communications services including fibre-optic broadband, mobile communications and cloud services. The group’s head office is located in Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo. It employs more than 240,000 people in 79 countries.
NTT provided a variety of telecommunications services for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, the 1972 Sapporo Games and the 1998 Nagano Olympics.
Tokyo 2020’s sponsorship program consists of Gold Partners, a second tier of ‘Official Partners’ and a third tier of Official Supporters. The IOC’s TOP sponsors for the Games are: Coca-Cola, Atos, Bridgestone, Dow, GE, McDonald’s, Omega, Panasonic, Procter and Gamble, Samsung and Visa.
