Enthusiasm for sport in Japan reached a new high today as the country celebrated Kayoko Fukushi's bronze medal in the marathon from the opening day of the World Athletics Championships. With a time of 2:27:45 and earning the first medal for Japan, Fukushi's strong performance fuels further momentum to Tokyo's goal to deliver a dynamic celebration in the heart of its city in 2020.
Tokyo 2020 CEO Masato Mizuno said: "I am thrilled to see our athletes contend for medals on the world stage, and I congratulate Fukushi for her inspiring run in the marathon. Japan is passionate about sport, and we are hopeful that our athletes will continue to perform well during the Championships in Moscow.
"Back home thousands and thousands of fans are supporting our Japanese team, and the level of activity and excitement is also enjoyed by our Bid. Should Tokyo receive the honour of hosting the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games, this passion for sport we exhibit on a daily basis will be on full display as we welcome our international friends."
