TOKYO 2020: Australia’s corporate community has gathered in Melbourne to kick-off efforts to send the Australian Olympic Team to the summer Games in Tokyo in 2020.

Around 100 corporate leaders joined Olympians past and present at the Melbourne Exhibition and Convention Centre on Wednesday May 23 to officially launch the Australian Olympic Team Appeal.

The highlight of fundraising efforts comes with the Prime Minister’s Olympic Dinner on June 27, 2020, hosted by the Victorian Olympic Council.

Corporate support is a critical element in raising funds to send the Australian Team to the Tokyo Games, an undertaking that is expected to cost more than $20 million.

In launching fundraising efforts, AOC President John Coates AC thanked corporate leaders for their commitment to our athletes.

"These young Olympic athletes work hard and make many sacrifices to represent their country," Coates said.

"So much of that happens away from the public eye. I am grateful that our corporate community continues to recognise the value of their efforts through such generous contributions.

"We have State and Territory Olympic Councils across the country rallying support for the Team. They will be holding a series of fundraising functions in the days and months ahead to ensure our Team has all it needs at Games time.

"The AOC does not seek nor receive Federal funding to send our Team away but we are gratified that individuals, businesses and our sponsors step up to assist in meeting the vast expense involved."

Chair of the Prime Minister’s Olympic Dinner, Peter Fox AM said the occasion has a proud history, raising more than $15 million for successive Australian Olympic Teams over the years.

"This event began before the Los Angeles Olympic Games in 1984 and has been held every four years since that time. It demonstrates the community’s commitment to our Olympians," Fox said.

"I am certainly inviting our corporate leadership to support this function again and I am very confident we can achieve our target. We all understand and anticipate the great pride Australians feel when our Team enters an Opening Ceremony. We want to contribute to that."

A raft of Olympians were present to support the launch including Mack Horton, Catherine Skinner, Steve Hooker, Linley Frame, Natalie Cook, Mark Stockwell, Steve Moneghetti, Stephanie Moorehouse, Louise Dobson, David Morris, Mark Turnbull, David Wansbrough and Leon Wiegard.
