The world's best female rider, the Dutch Marianne Vos, has been in Denmark Monday and Tuesday this week to inspect the circuits at the UCI Road World Championships in September in Copenhagen and Rudersdal.
On Monday, Vos and her team mate Kirsten Wild, tested the time trial circuit in the centre of Copenhagen, where the females are having their time trial over two rounds of each 13.9 km in the centre of the capital of Denmark, Copenhagen, on 20 September. Afterwards Vos said: "The traffic was dense, but we came through twice. It is not a technically difficult circuit and it is very shallow. My immediate reaction is that it is not tailored for me, but I think that if my condition peaks at the time, I stand a good chance."
The Dutch superstar was thrilled by the thought of participating in a world championship in the centre of a large city as Copenhagen. She adds: "I am so much looking forward to passing the Parliament and Amalienborg Castle. Copenhagen is a fantastic city and, indeed, it is something special that the roads are being closed off at the time of the event".
On Tuesday, Marianne Vos and Kirsten Wild trained on the 14 km lap, in Rudersdal, where the females' world championships are being held on 24 September over 10 rounds. Marianne Vos said after the training: "It is really a beautiful circuit and as it is not that tough I believe that we will see a high speed from the very start with a lot of attacks. I think that after 120 km, the relatively shallow hills will seem as big mountains. All in all, the route is good for me and the world championship is my ultimate goal for the year. After I have come in second for the past four times I am determined to win this time".
Marianne Vos is a world champion from 2006 in Salzburg and she took silver at the latest four UCI Road World Championships. She is four times world champion in cycling cross and has picked up Olympic medals and world championships as a track rider as well.
The UCI Road World Championships 2011 are held from 19 to 25 September in Copenhagen and Rudersdal. The event is part of the UCI Bike City Copenhagen, BCC, which HRH Crown Prince Frederik, who is also an IOC-member, is protector for. Copenhagen is the only city in the world, which has been appointed as Bike City by the UCI and between 2008 and 2011 Copenhagen is host of 6 major international cycling events.
Behind BCC (Bike City Copenhagen) stand as strong partners as the Danish Cycling Federation, Sport Event Denmark, the City of Copenhagen, the City of Ballerup, the City of Rudersdal, the Capital Region and Wonderful Copenhagen.
