The Sochi 2014 Olympic Torch Relay arrived in the Tambov region, where it will spend two days. On the first day of the Relay regional phase 190 torchbearers covered a distance of 27 km. Among the Olympic torchbearers were the nominees of the Presenting Partners of the Sochi 2014 Torch Relay: the Coca-Cola Company, OSAO "Ingosstrakh" and OAO "Russian Railways".

The Sochi 2014 Torch Relay arrived in Tambov at noon on the specialized train No. 701 from Saratov. The first torchbearer was Oksana Evteyeva - international master of sports in track and field, a finalist in the Olympic Games in Sydney, winner of the European Cup, and Russian champion in the triple jump. She passed the Olympic flame to Svetlana Bystrova, mother to a large family, raising five children.

On the threshold of the grand city celebration, an unusual record was set: local craft workers prepared the largest knit hat in the world. The huge seven-meter hat with a pompom, made in the three colors of the Russian flag and decorated with the inscriptions "Tambov region" and "Sochi 2014", was set up on a special metal frame, delighting the eyes of tens of thousands of citizens. The Deputy to the Governor of the Tambov region, Alexander Sazonov, receiving a certificate for the new record entered into Russia's Book of Records, remarked, "This is our first record in the new year, and it is very dear to us. This record-breaking hat embodies all of the hospitality of Tambov, ready to warm all of our athletes!"

Having added a new record to the collection of the Sochi 2014 Torch Relay, Tambov was ready to greet the final torchbearer on stage. Svetlana Nageykina, an honored master of sports of the USSR, Olympic champion in 1988, and famous skier, after finishing her city phase of the Torch Relay, went onto the stage and lit the Cauldron. This symbol of the Sochi 2014 Torch Relay will warm the hearts of residents and guests of the city for a long time; the Cauldron was given to Tambov the previous day as a gift by Presenting Partner of the Torch Relay, OSAO "Ingosstrakh".

On the 13th of January, the Sochi 2014 Olympic Torch Relay will complete its journey through the Tambov region in Michurinsk.
