The PyeongChang Organizing Committee for the 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (POCOG) was launched today with the inaugural meeting of its General Assembly, three months after the Games were awarded to the alpine city.

Jin Sun Kim, former Governor of the Gangwon Province where PyeongChang is located, was elected as President and Chief Executive Officer of the POCOG. Kim, a 3-term Governor, was instrumental in all three bids for the Games during his tenure. After his governorship, Kim was nominated by the President of the Republic of Korea as a Special Ambassador to the successful PyeongChang bid in Durban, South Africa.

"The PyeongChang 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games should take place in an economically viable, socio-culturally reasonable, eco-friendly and peaceful manner," said the newly elected President & CEO. "Every single stakeholder such as the national government, the Gangwon Provincial government, the National Assembly, the Korean Olympic Committee, and the Korean people should work together for the realization of this goal."

At the meeting, the General Assembly approved the nomination of Dong Hoo Moon as its Vice President and Secretary General. Moon was pivotal in the organization of the recently concluded IAAF World Championships Daegu 2011. He also served as Secretary General of the Korean Organizing Committee for the 2002 FIFA World Cup and Director General of Sport for the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games as well.

About 100 leading figures of the Korean sports circle attended the General Assembly meeting, which took place at the Seoul Westin Chosun Hotel. Among them were Mr. Kwang Sik CHOI, Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism ; Mr. Yong Sung PARK, KOC President; Mr. Moon Soon CHOI, Governor of Gangwon Province; Dae Sung MOON, IOC member from Korea; and Olympians such as Yuna KIM, world figure skating queen, and So Hee KIM and Yi Kyeong CHUN, respectively Olympic gold- medal winners in the short track speed skating.

Representatives from various sectors such as the national government, sports, media, art/culture, religion, and education will partake as Executive Board members while the Prime Minister, Chairman of the National Assembly, and business leaders will form an advisory group. IOC member Moon and Yuna Kim were also elected into the Executive Board, while Mr. Kun Hee LEE, another prominent IOC member from Korea, was elected to the advisory group.

The POCOG will officially begin its first stage of work, which includes the set-up of the Games Master Plan and the basic design of sporting venues, in a close cooperation and collaboration with the International Olympic Committee.
