President Park Geun-hye made a trip to Alpensia Resort in PyeongChang, Gangwon Province, in the afternoon. During her visit, President Park was briefed on how preparations were going for the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games and complimented relevant officials on their hard work to make the Winter Olympics a success. She also made a stop at the ski jumping stadium to be briefed on the progress of the construction of key facilities and competition venues.
Before taking office, President Park served as an advisor to a special committee of the Grand National Party, the precursor of the Saenuri Party, for supporting the bid for the PyeongChang Winter Olympics. In that capacity, she joined the citizens of Gangwon Province on July 7, 2011, in praying for and rejoicing over the success of the bid.
Today’s on-site checkup by the President was arranged out of an understanding that it was necessary for the success of the Games for her to take stock of the progress of preparations at the half-way point between the date when PyeongChang was declared as the host and the date of the opening ceremony. It was also a good opportunity for the President to encourage officials involved who are making dedicated efforts despite a challenging working environment.
In this connection, President Park has continued to express her intent to provide nationwide support so that the PyeongChang Winter Olympics would serve as a catalyst for enhancing the international standing of the Republic of Korea and for developing Gangwon Province.
During her visit, President Park expressed her commitment to strengthening government-wide support, stressing that the PyeongChang Winter Games were a national event. She also asked the organizers to take an economical approach in the preparation of facilities while also devising measures for their effective use after the Games.
After receiving an update from Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Kim Jong-deok on the progress in overall preparations, the President took time to talk with several national athletes, staff members of the organizing committee and representatives of the companies heading construction of the facilities. She also participated in an inspection of the ski jumping stadium.
Approximately 120 people were present for the President’s visit, including Culture Minister Kim, Organizing Committee President Cho Yang-ho, Gangwon-do Administrative Vice Governor Kim Jeong-sam, National Assembly members Yeom Dong-yeol and Kwon Seong-dong, Korean Olympic Committee President Kim Jung-haeng, Korea Paralympic Committee President Kim Sung-il, organizing committee staff, Alpensia Resort staff and representatives of the aforementioned construction companies.
