The Paralympic Torch Relay in Sochi: lighting of the Cauldron in Krasnaya Polyana

The Sochi 2014 Paralympic Torch Relay was held yesterday in the Central District of Sochi, and then returned to the Mountain Cluster. Among the Torchbearers of the Sochi 2014 Relay were the Representing Partners nominees - the Coca-Cola Company, OSAO Ingosstrakh, OAO Russian Railways and Volkswagen Group Rus.

The start of the city stage of the Sochi 2014 Torch Relay was held in the city administration. The first of the 115 Torchbearers was Konstantin Ernst - a Russian TV personality, producer and CEO of Channel One. The Keepers of the flame lit his Torch, and he launched the penultimate stage of the Paralympic Torch Relay, which will end tomorrow with the lighting of the main Cauldron during the Opening Ceremony of the Paralympic Games.

The Torchbearers in Sochi were: Russian two-time champion in archery for persons with spinal cord injuries, active participant in the Paralympic Movement Rimma Ivankina, Chairman of "Stoic", the Sochi city public organization for wheelchair users, Oleg Stekolnikov, WWII veteran Vasily Karikh, as well as President of the International Paralympic Committee, Sir Philip Craven. The Sochi 2014 Paralympic Torch Relay was also attended by well-known Paralympic athletes Mami Sato (Japan), and Kim Hak-Sung (South Korea).

One after another the Torchbearers passed along the main avenue to the Sochi Winter Theater and back, and then the procession moved to Krasnaya Polyana. The Cauldron on Medals Plaza was lit by the final Torchbearer, a representative of the International Paralympic Committee, Alexander Naumenko.

The final stage of the Sochi 2014 Torch Relay starts today - the Paralympic Games Torch will be carried through the main streets of Sochi and the Olympic Park, located in the Coastal Cluster. The Relay ends at the Fisht Stadium, where the final Torchbearer will light the main Cauldron.

The Sochi 2014 Paralympic Torch Relay

The Sochi 2014 Paralympic Torch Relay will be the most innovative relay in the history of the Paralympic Games. Each day, the Paralympic Flame will be lit simultaneously in several cities of one of the Russian federal districts. The method of lighting the Flame will change in each region and be a surprise, since each torch Lighting Ceremony will be unique. From the sun's rays to a hammer and anvil to a Russian stove to the spark of a volcano, the Paralympic Torch Relay will be unique. The urban stage will feature a unique process of lighting the Paralympic Flame.

A total of more than 15,000 torchbearers and 4,000 volunteers will take part in the Paralympic Torch Relay. The Relay’s slogan "Overcoming. Winning. Inspiring." was chosen for good reason. Paralympic athletes, in spite of everything, find the strength to overcome all difficulties and continue to fight. Participating in sports competitions gives them the joy of victory. Every day they break stereotypes, inspire and instill confidence, exciting fans and viewers worldwide. They all share life stories of overcoming that embody the Paralympic values of courage, equality, determination and inspiration.

A Paralympic Flame Lighting Ceremony will be held in Sochi on March 5.

The Relay will conclude at the Opening Ceremony of the Paralympic Games at the Fisht Olympic Stadium on March 7, 2014.

Three special projects are planned as part of the Relay:

For the first time, the Paralympic Flame will be lit at Cape Dezhneva - the easternmost point of Russia and all Eurasia and the first part of Russia to greet the dawn. Also, for the first time, one of the stages Sochi 2014 Paralympic Torch Relay will be held in the British town of Stoke Mandeville in the county of Buckinghamshire – it is considered the birthplace of the Paralympic Games. The teams « Strizhi and Rus’» will perform aerobatics in the sky over Moscow Region and draw the symbol of the Paralympics – Agitos.
