(ATR) Best known for its boldly colored sports apparel and uniforms for the Russian team, Moscow-based Bosco is supplying far more genteel threads for IOC members to wear in Rio de Janeiro.
The dark grey suits for both men and women include the Olympic rings embroidered on the chest pocket. The ensembles lack the usual colorful Bosco flair. The only clue the clothing comes from the company is a small tag on the inside of the jacket.
While made under the Bosco brand, the tropical wool suits are actually stitched together in Italian fashion capital Milan.
Bosco was the winner of an international tender last year in which other companies also competed, saysTimo Lumme, Managing Director, IOC Television and Marketing Services.
An earlier version of this story failed to include this information..
Formed in 1991, Bosco is now a collection of retail lines sold in Russia and at boutiques worldwide. Bosco is the major shareholder of the famous Red Square department store Gum. Since 2002 the company has outfitted the Russian Olympic team.
Founder and chairman Mikhail Kusnirovich, who can count Vladimir Putin as a friend, is the energy behind the company. While Russian government ministers connected to allegations of state-run doping have been banned from Rio by the IOC, Kusnirovich is among those Russians who are welcome. He was spotted arriving with the entourage of IOC President Thomas Bach at a reception hosted by the US Olympic Committee earlier this week.
IOC officials say the deal with Bosco was struck well before the controversy with Russia erupted and there is no connection,
Still, some IOC members professed to be surprised their new togs in Rio came from Bosco.
"Ironic," says one member of the EB about the Bosco suits while junior member says wanted to know more about the timing.
One of the female members of the IOC says the new Bosco wardrobe is a better fit for her then past outfits from famous designers such as Ralph Lauren.
"They were designed to be worn by a 22-year-old," she complained with a wry smile.
