31 October 201, Sochi, Russia - The "Clean Sea for Clean City" environmental initiative has concluded in Sochi this week. The event was organized by the Sochi City Administration, Sochi 2014 Organizing Committee, and The Coca-Cola Company, Worldwide IOC partner. The event was dedicated to the World Black Sea Day and the World Clean-Up Day. Within the initiative an educational ECO-town was set up on Sochi's central square. Schoolchildren, students and Sochi 2014 Volunteers all took-part in the eco-activities.
The event also saw an educational roundtable, dedicated to raising environmental awareness and culture. Nikolay Drozdov, Moscow State University professor and famous TV presenter as well as representatives of the Sochi City Administration, civic environmental organizations and business community all participated. The "Black Sea Box" education project was presented to the participants in the form of teaching materials prepared as a result of cooperation with the Black Sea Economic Cooperation (BSEC), World Wildlife Fund - Turkey (WWF-Turkey), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and The Coca-Cola Company. "The Black Sea Box' is set to be introduced to classrooms across Russia and incorporated into various educational subjects at primary and secondary school level.
The World Black Sea Day and the World Clean-Up Day were joined by 16 Sochi 2014 Volunteer centers in 12 Russian cities. More than 3,500 volunteers across the country undertook clean-ups as well as a number of creative and social projects.
The Black Sea day is observed in memory of a day in 1996 when six Black Sea countries - Bulgaria, Romania, Turkey, Georgia, Ukraine and Russia - signed the Road Map on Rehabilitation and Protection of the Black Sea. The Road Map was extended after thorough research of the Black Sea marine environment took place, which revealed that the environment's resilience has significantly deteriorated in comparison to the previous three decades.
The main international document regulating the issues of the Black Sea protection is the Convention on the Protection of the Black Sea against Pollution, signed in Bucharest (referred to as the Bucharest Convention) by six Black Sea countries - Bulgaria, Georgia, Russia, Romania, Turkey and Ukraine in 1992.
