(ATR) Thailand will be hosting the 6th Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games 2021.
The Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) announced on Monday that the Host City Contract was signed on April 23 in a ceremony conducted via video conference between the Sports Authority of Thailand in Bangkok and OCA headquarters in Kuwait.
The Games will take place in two cities, Bangkok and Pattaya. The dates have not been finalized but will be in the first half of 2021.
The 24 sports in the program are: Indoor athletics, cue sports, bowling, dance sport, chess, futsal, roller sports/climbing, short-course swimming (25m), muay, jujitsu, BMX cycling, hoop takraw/sepak takraw, kurash, floorball, netball, taekwondo, indoor hockey, karate, e-sports, badminton (three events), pencak silat, cheerleading, sambo, and indoor rowing.
"Bangkok hosted the first Asian Indoor Games in 2005 and the first Asian Martial Arts Games in 2009 and now we will have the honor of hosting the merged event for the first time," said Gen. Prawit Wongsuwon, president of the Thailand National Olympic Committee.
"With the commitment of the Royal Thai Government and the Ministry of Tourism and Sport we are sure the games will be a tremendous success. Although we are apart due to the need for social distancing, I feel that sport and the Olympic Movement brings us close together."
An OCA statement said president Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah was very disappointed to not be in Thailand for the signing ceremony due to coronavirus. But he says his organization remains busy despite the pandemic.
"We are working together to continue our calendar, whatever the situation in the world, because this is our duty," he said.
The OCA announced on April 23 that Doha, Qatar and Riyadh, Saudi Arabia were the bidders for the 2030 Asian Games. The winning bid is to be decided at the OCA general assembly scheduled for November 29, 2020, on the sidelines of the 6th Asian Beach Games.
As of now, the Beach Games are still scheduled for Nov. 28-Dec. 6, 2020 in Sanya, China.
Earlier this month, the OCA director General Husain Al-Musallam said "we remain hopeful that our Asian Beach Games can go ahead as planned in seven months’ time".
