(ATR) Athletes aim to claim the first gold medals of the swimming event Tuesday at the Pan Am Games.

Six gold medals will be handed out at the Olympic caliber swimming venue in Toronto as athletes compete in the 100 meter freestyle, 200 meter butterfly and 4x100 meter relay races on both the men’s and women’s sides.

Large crowds are expected at the venue that has featured cheering sections for the diving competition that concluded on Monday.

PASO and FINA president Julio Maglione expected to be in attendance to the opening of the competition.

This will likely be the last event Maglione attends as he sets off for Kazan, Russia on Wednesday to prepare for the beginning of the FINA world championships that begin July 24.

The action on Tuesday will also feature the individual medals for the equestrian dressage event as 21 athletes compete for their chance at gold. The team dressage medals were handed out on Sunday with the United States claiming the first equestrian gold of the Pan Ams.

Tuesday concludes the equestrian dressage events and the next discipline of the sport will begin on Thursday with eventing.

Archery joins swimming as the only other event getting its start Tuesday morning with the men’s and women’s qualification matches.

Tuesday will also feature the first day of medals for athletes competing in badminton and water polo, the latter wrapping up its competition Wednesday after being the first event to kick off the Pan Ams before the opening ceremonies.

Athletes in canoeing flat and judo will finish competing for their chances at the podium on Tuesday, bringing the total number of sports completed to 11.

Canada and the United States are beginning to distance themselves from the rest of the pack at 41 and 36 medals respectively. Mexico is in third with 27 medals. Canada still leads the gold medal count with 17.
