(ATR) In my quest to find the biggest, brightest and the best PyeongChang 2018 souvenir, I stumbled upon the most expensive item in the giant Olympic Superstore: The Olympic Heritage Collection 2018 Moon Jar Collection.
Amidst all of the plush souvenir mascots, Olympic pins and other PyeongChang 2018 logo items, this exquisite piece can be yours for a mere 1,750,000 KRW or $1,616.58 USD at today’s exchange rate.
This is a framed collection of 24 Moon jars, each one decorated to depict some important highlight of the past 24 Olympic Winter Games. The first jar highlights Chamonix, France, 1924, the first Olympic Winter Games. The last jar represents PyeongChang 2018.
Moon jars are traditional Korean white porcelain originally made during the late 17th through 18th centuries. The "moon" name comes from its shape and the milky color glaze which is reminiscent of a full moon. Noble people of that period believed the jars brought prosperity and wealth to their family when placed within the household. These Olympic themed jars are updated versions of the historic ones.
The jar from Lake Placid 1980 features the "Miracle on Ice" U.S. Hockey team victory. The Jamaican bobsleigh team is portrayed on the jar for Calgary 1988. The Salt Lake City 2002 jar pays homage to the Utah Olympic Oval – complete with elevation measurements to commemorate its nickname of the "Fastest Ice on Earth".
The set is framed with a plexiglass cover to protect these tiny jars and make this piece ready to hang on the wall of your man cave or dining room. The charming sales person did a great job of explaining the cultural significance of this unique item and was ready to take my order.
You can see it in the Olympic Superstore or at www.wagti.com/heritage
