Summer Universiade Underway in Bangkok

(ATR) More than 10,000 athletes and officials have gathered in Bangkok for the second largest event on the IOC calendar.

Athletes from all over the world are in action in 15 sports at the 24th Universiade in Bangkok.

Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn opened the games on August 8 at Rajamangala National Stadium.

After two days of competition, Russia tops the medal rankings, followed by the United States, then South Korea. Athletes from more than 156 countries are taking part in the games.

Also known as the World University Games, the Universiade is open to university students between the ages of 17 and 28.

The athletes’ village is housed in the dormitories at Thammasat University, with lodging for 10,025.

A gold card ticket for entry to all events plus opening and closing ceremonies sells for $33.

The most well-known sponsors are Thai Airlines, Swiss watch maker Tissot, and brewer ThaiBev.

Games organizers plan random drug tests throughout the games plus compulsory tests for every gold medalist and any record setters.

FISU also accepted three new member associations: Bhutan, Dutch Antilles and Montenegro.

Winter and Summer Universiades are held in odd-numbered years. Belgrade will host summer 2009 and Harbin, winter. In 2011, the games move to Shenzhen for summer and Erzurum in winter.
