Beijing 2022 is today beginning the first of a five-day schedule ofvenues visits and presentations for the International Olympic Committee (IOC)Evaluation Commission with a pledge to show the IOC Evaluation Commission membersa "Beijing that they would not expect."
With many Evaluation Commission members familiar with the city following aspectacular Beijing 2008 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the day will include anoverview of the strong Olympic legacy, modern infrastructure and proven reliability thecity offers today.
An opening ceremony was held this morning to mark the official start of the visit, withthe Beijing 2022 delegation led by Madam Liu Yandong, Chinese Vice Premier, andincluding athletes and senior Beijing 2022 Bid officials.
Liu Yandong, Vice Premier of China’s State Council, delivered the opening remarks bypledging the full support of the Chinese Government towards the Beijing 2022 Bid: "Wewill honor our commitment made in the Candidature File and provide solid financial andlegal guarantee in hosting the 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games."
Liu Peng, Minister of the General Administration of Sport of China and President of theChinese Olympic Committee, said: "Beijing 2022’s bid will inspire over 300 millionChinese to participate in winter sports if we win, which will contribute greatly to thedevelopment of international Olympic cause."
Wang Anshun, Mayor of Beijing and President of the Beijing 2022 Bid Committee, said:"Beijing 2022 is capable and confident of staging a most memorable and joyfulrendezvous that will fully embody the spirit of the Olympic Agenda 2020."
Alexander Zhukov, Chairman of the IOC Evaluation Commission for the 2022 OlympicWinter Games, said during a speech at the opening ceremony, "The success of the lastEvaluation Commission visit in 2001 and the 2008 Olympic Games which followed arewell known. But some years have passed since the last visit. Not only has this citydeveloped dramatically in that time but so too has the Olympic Movement."
Mr. Zhukov continued: "We are glad to note that you [Beijing 2022] have alreadyincorporated some of the Olympic Agenda 2020 reforms into your Games concept. Youhave maximized the use of existing world-class sports venues; you have takenadvantage of your experience of hosting major international events; and you haveidentified clear legacy goals."
The opening ceremony signalled the start of 14 presentations that will cover all aspectsof the Beijing 2022 Bid over the next days.
Later this morning in Beijing, the members of the IOC Evaluation Commission will bepresented with details of Beijing 2022’s overarching vision and plans for legacy andengagement; sustainability; overall Games concept; organisation of the Olympic Villages,and an overview of the proposed venues in Beijing.
During the afternoon, the IOC Evaluation Commission will visit all proposed venues andsites in the Beijing cluster. Five venues are a direct legacy from the Beijing 2008 Olympicand Paralympic Games and all are existing and successfully operating today. At eachvenue, they will hear detailed presentations about plans for Games and post-Games usefor each.
The venue tour for the Evaluation Commission delegation will include visits to the:
Linglong Tower, with sky-rise views overlooking all the venues
Beijing National Stadium (also known as the Bird’s Nest), which would host theOpening and Closing Ceremonies of the Beijing 2022 Olympic and ParalympicWinter Games
National Aquatics Centre (also known as the Water Cube), planned curling venue
National Indoor Stadium – set to host Men’s Ice Hockey
Capital Indoor Stadium – proposed Short Track and Figure Skating venue
Wukesong Sports Centre – planned Women’s Ice Hockey venue
The delegates will also visit the National Speed Skating Stadium and the Olympic Villagesites, which will already be built before 2022 independently from the Games.
The strong venue infrastructure and Olympic legacy will help support the Chinesegovernment’s new "300 Million People Winter Sports Plan," which was launched to introduce more young people to winter sports and build an even larger base of athletesfor future Olympic and Paralympic Games.
