The following is attributable to Jim Benson, member of the USOC Board of Directors and the University of Illinois Foundation and Scott Blackmun, USOC CEO:
"The United States Olympic Committee and its Paralympic division are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Dr. Timothy Nugent. Dr. Nugent was a true pioneer of the disability sports movement in the U.S. He paved the way for so many athletes with disabilities, including creating the Division of Disability Resources and Educational Services in 1948 at the University of Illinois, which is now a Paralympic Training Site, and one of the most significant contributors to the growth of the Paralympic movement worldwide as well as Team USA’s success at the Paralympic Games. Because of his vision and tireless efforts, a legacy of opportunities have been created for people with physical disabilities to pursue educational, professional and athletic excellence. We extend our condolences to Dr. Nugent’s family, as well as the many athletes for whom he was not only a positive influence, but also an inspiration throughout his life."
