GUANGZHOU, China, July 22, 2010 - The 16th Asian Games (www.gz2010.cn/en), part of the worldwide Olympic movement and governed by the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) has received a near unanimous positive "report card" from the world news media in attendance at the 2nd World Press Briefing currently underway in this South China metropolis.
The Asian Games are the second largest sports event in the world after the Summer Olympic Games.
"Everything we have seen here is clearly at the Olympic level," said Mr. Markus Kreutz, Regional Director, Asia-Pacific, Associated Press. Echoing these comments were similar statements from journalists representing Agency France-Press, Thompson Reuters and Japanese-based Kyodo News, Tokyo Shimbun and Chunichi Shimbun. "I have been truly impressed. The venues and facilities here in Guangzhou are just as good as the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics," said Ms. Sheila Hula representing the Atlanta, Georgia-based Around the Rings.com which exclusively covers the worldwide Olympic Movement.
Journalists from across China and around the world were given a private showing of the all-new Media Village and the Main Media Centre for the Games as well as the new Aquatics Centre for the Games.
During Games time, some 10,000 Chinese and international reporters are expected to cover the event in Guangzhou, 70% of whom will be accommodated at the Media Village in the Asian Games Town.
The International Broadcast Centre (IBC) will open on October 28; the Main Press Centre (MPC) will open on November 1 and the Media Village will open on October 30.
