A road race event, one for men, one for women, is proposed for the 2016 Olympics. (Getty Images) Roller sport is represented by the International Federation for Roller Sports (FIRS), headquartered in Rome.
Membership includes 113 international federations.
President of FIRS is Sabatino Aracu of Italy, first vice president is Valerie Leftwich from Australia. Roberto Marotta of Italy is secretary general.
Important nations for the sport include Australia, China, Colombia, France, Italy, Korea and Spain.
The Olympic proposal for roller sports calls for a road race. A field of 40 men and 40 women would compete over a two to three day schedule at the Games. City streets would serve as the field of play.
Skateboarding, while a discipline among roller sports, is not proposed for the Olympics. While seemingly of great appeal to youth, the road race is considered more athletic by leaders of the federation, plus the discipline is well-organized, with events on every continent.
Other disciplines covered by FIRS include artistic skating and rink hockey (Juan Antonio Samaranch’s sport in youth).
Roller speed skating is one of the events in the Asian Games and the Pan American Games.
A video used by FIRS in its presentation to the IOC is supposed to be available for viewing from Nov. 15 at the federation Web site, www.firs.org.
