(ATR) SportAccord Convention, one of the largest and most influential sports conferences, will undertake several changes in 2016 thanks to its new leadership.
Following former SportAccord president Marius Vizer’s condemning remarks about the IOC at the 2015 SportAccord Convention that led to his resignation, ASOIF president Francisco Ricci Bitti took over the reins of the convention. International Ski Federation president Gian-Franco Kasper is serving as the interim president of the SportAccord organization.
Although the convention and the organization are currently separate entities, the SportAccord Council will begin talks to merge the two bodies on Jan. 26.
The leadership change also brings a location change for the event. The 2016 SportAccord Convention will be hosted in the Olympic capital of Lausanne, Switzerland from Apr. 17-22.
"What better place could SportAccord Convention have chosen to hold its annual event than Lausanne, a city which is made for sport," said IOC president Thomas Bach.
Prior to his resignation, Vizer had proposed the convention remain in Sochi, Russia on an annual basis as opposed to rotating around the globe as it has since its inception in 2003. The deadline for cities to express interest in bidding to host the 2017 or 2018 conventions is Jan. 28.
Full registration for the 2016 event opens on Monday, Jan. 11. The registration fee is $2,500 but a limited amount of pre-sale passes are still available at a reduced price of $1,500.
