“The appointment of one of the world’s biggest electronic brands highlights the enormous global commercial appeal and prestige of the Championship,” Bernard Lapasset, IRB chairman, said.
Toshiba also sponsored the Rugby World Cup in 2007 in France.
IAAF Partners with NBC
The International Association of Athletics Federations announced that NBC Universal Sports will broadcast U.S. events, including the IAAF World Athletics Series of competitions between 2010-2015 and the Golden League for 2009.
"This is an improved agreement for the premier events of our sport," IAAF President Lamine Diack said.
“I am delighted that now American fans will not only be able to enjoy World Championship athletics, but also the ÅF Golden League across the three mediums of terrestrial, cable and Internet.”
McDonald’s Sales Booming
Olympics TOP sponsor McDonald’s saw a 6.9 percent increase in its same-store sales in April.
According to the company, the increase is a result of its dollar menu, new coffee selections and chicken snack wraps in the U.S.
Although total sales were up 8.9 percent in constant currencies, they fell 1 percent worldwide due to the stronger dollar overseas.
Sony Ericsson Continues Sponsorship of Tennis Tournament
Sony Ericsson will continue its sponsorship of its Miami-based men's and women's tennis tournament through 2011.
The Sony Ericsson Open will be extended by a year to a five-year sponsorship. The company is in its third year of the deal.
Despite the extended agreement, the head of Sony Ericsson, Aldo Liguori, said the company “will be requesting more the same amount of money” when renewal negations begin at the end of the year.
“Sponsors are more demanding,” International Tennis Federation President Francesco Ricci Bitti said.
Coke and RBC Encourages Fans to Sign Up for Torch Carry
Olympic sponsors Coca-Cola and RBC are encouraging fans to sign up to carry the 2010 Olympic torch.
The two companies have about 6,000 positions to give away.
“Two-thirds of our spots are being drawn at the end of May so we are really putting a big push on,” Coca-Cola’s communications manager, Kristen Mihailides said.
The torch will travel through Canada for 106 days.

…The Hartford Financial Services Group, Inc. and U.S. Paralympics have donated 100 sport wheelchairs to Chicago Paralympic sports programs. The donation is part of the support for Chicago’s bid to host the 2016 Games.
